Wilderness
For Rising 7th - 8th Graders
The Wilderness Camp is organized and sponsored by the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Youths from across the state of Oklahoma come together for this unique camp that involves radical community building as participants must organize every aspect of their community life together.

Teams of approximately 8 (girls & boys) are assigned a wilderness area where the only thing waiting for them is a longhouse frame and box with a hole in it.

Together the teams must form a consensus on where to locate their living area and latrines, build a fire pit, decide their menues and figure out meal preparation and clean up.

The teams then enjoy the rewards of their success or endure the consequences of their failure to cooperate - perhaps a missed meal.  (Hearty lunches are provided each day to make sure no one goes hungry.)
Once in camp, the teams stay in camp, rain or shine.  Together they meet the challenges of seeing that every team member is cared for and included.

For many who attend, the Wilderness Camp is a life turning point.  Watchful adults intervene only in cases where physical safety becomes an issue. This insures that campers will accept the challenge of building community together throughout the 7 day experience.
